About our home, City of Port Phillip

The City of Port Phillip is a vibrant municipality, where the city meets the sea, located on the northern foreshore of Port Phillip Bay stretching for over 11 km, and south of the Melbourne Central Business District.

One of the oldest areas of Melbourne, Port Phillip is known for its dynamic urban villages, magnificent heritage buildings, beautiful beaches, parks, gardens and its inclusive, diverse community celebrated for its bold, artistic expressions. The city features some of Victoria’s most popular and innovative cultural events, recreational facilities, restaurants and entertainment venues.

The City of Port Phillip contains a number of varied retail, entertainment and leisure precincts including Bay Street (Port Melbourne), Victoria Avenue (Albert Park), Clarendon Street (South Melbourne), Armstrong Street (Middle Park), Fitzroy Street (St Kilda), Acland Street (St Kilda), Carlisle Street (Balaclava) and Ormond Road (Elwood).
Comprising seven wards, it is predominantly an amalgamation of three former cities – St Kilda, parts of South Melbourne, most of Port Melbourne, as well as a small portion
of Windsor from the former City of Prahran, with a population in excess of 110,000 people. Council offices operate several facilities including local libraries, childcare centres, parks, playgrounds and community centres.

Major corporations and companies are headquartered in Port Phillip.
